Description

This is one of the first all-terrain vehicles in the history of the automobile. The Willys MB, better known as a ‘Jeep’, was built in the early 1940s for the US army. The vehicle is an emblem of World War II as well as a symbol of freedom – a status Jeep owes to its versatility, light weight and manoeuvrability.

Nobody knows exactly where the name ‘Jeep’ comes from. According to some sources, it is an abbreviation of 'Just Enough Essential Parts’.

What we do know for sure is that the ‘Jeep’ brand name was made official in June 1950 by Willys-Overland.

The Jeep Willys was used on various continents: not just in Europe and North Africa, but also during later wars right up until the Korean War (1950-1953). During the campaign in North Africa, which was occupied by Rommel and his troops, a special desert version with wider wheels was put into action.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the jeep, Autoworld will be spotlighting ten Jeep Willys from the years 1941-1986, together with a ‘limited edition’ from the contemporary range.
